Curious Education

Spreading lessons from the loam, stories from the soil, and knowledge from beyond the fields we know.

Why learn about archaeology?

Knowledge of our shared human past can give incredible insights into the world around us, and how modern life came to be; why do we construct cities the way we do? Where do our place names come from? How has evolution of human thought shaped art and science over the last million or so years? It is an examination of humans, who we are, what has changed, and what remains constant.

Archaeology is the story of every-day, normal people, who have gone about their lives caring for their favourite tools, breaking crockery in busy kitchens, burying their dead with tokens of affection, writing complaints to companies for poor quality items, scratching graffiti into walls, and each one of them, just like us, changing the world a little.

Democratisation of knowledge

For a long time archaeology was a pursuit of the wealthy. It required the cost of a classical education, time to travel the world searching for sites, and the resources for excavations and research. General education for prospective students of the field was rare and expensive, and access to the discipline for the general public was minimal. Even now, museums and heritage organisations face funding cuts and closures, and there are fewer and fewer places to learn about this fascinating subject.

At Illmade & Errant we are dedicated to the democratisation of knowledge; everyone should be able to access learning and education in a variety of subjects and fields. While we do have a standard hourly rate and speakers fee, we are more than happy to offer discounts and even free sessions to groups, schools, and clubs with limited funding who are providing an educational service. In addition, if you or your organisation are able, we also have the option to donate an amount over the standard fee to subsidise free and discounted sessions for anyone who needs them!

Talks and lectures

Local Archaeology, with Alex!

Our talks on local archaeology use Alex - an imaginary local resident that we follow through time, using real archaeological finds to learn how they lived in different time periods. These talks are tailored to your local area, and expertly search and use local historic environment records to find out what Alex's profession, hobbies, fears, and favourite foods may have been through time, in your neighbourhood!

Specialised talks

For more specific societies and interest groups, talks can be tailored to what you want to learn! Whether that is how we can examine evidence with archaeological science, or the role of folklore in archaeological investigation, our expert knowledge of the field allows us to cater to your group's areas of interest.

Alternatively, perhaps you want to hear more about Sorren's work in archaeology, what they have been working on recently, or even their specialty in experimental archaeology!

To inquire about booking a lecture or talk for your group, please get in touch via the form at the bottom of this page!

Schools and small groups

Whether you are supplementing a history curriculum, engaging with an interested tutor group, or running an extracurricular club, we can run one-off or short courses of sessions to give students an insight into what archaeology is, and what skills it can grant!

As well as specific knowledge, these sessions involve a high degree of critical thinking, analysis of sources, formulating theories and cohesive arguments, and are an excellent supplement to both humanities and science studies.

Our fully DBS checked archaeologist Sorren has spent time working with students from the age of 8 and up, and focuses on catering their teaching to the needs of the students.
